Nutrition for eating behaviour disorders (EBD)

Eating Disorder (ED) is a mental illness where the relationship with food ceases to be neutral.

Olga Bezugla, Clinical Dietitian

It is not a matter of willpower or discipline. ED has a biological, psychological, and social nature and requires comprehensive treatment - both medical and psychotherapeutic.

At Dr. Bezugla's Clinical Dietology Centre, dietitians specialise in developing nutrition programmes for ED. A personal protocol is developed based on:

  • examinations and diagnosis (bulimia, anorexia, binge eating, ARFID)
  • eating habits and lifestyle
  • metabolic indicators
  • identified deficiencies of micro- and macronutrients
  • hormonal panel data
  • data from work with a psychotherapist

  • Episodes of overeating, often hidden
  • compensatory behaviour: laxatives, induced vomiting
  • self-esteem dependent on weight

Compulsive overeating

  • Loss of control during eating
  • feelings of guilt and shame after episodes
  • emotional eating as a way to cope with stress

ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)

  • Marked selectivity in food, not related to weight or body
  • avoidance of entire food groups due to texture, taste, fear
  • risk of deficiencies due to a limited diet

For a person living with an eating disorder, it is difficult to view the situation objectively — this is a feature of the disorder, not a reluctance to acknowledge the problem. Often, the first to notice changes are those close to them: partners, parents, friends.

In all the cases listed, our dietitians are ready to develop a nutritional strategy that will support psychotherapeutic treatment of eating disorders.

How working with a dietitian and psychotherapist proceeds.

Eating disorders are treatable. The earlier the support begins, the sooner eating behaviour stabilises and a calm attitude towards food returns. It is crucial to establish an effective working model with a dietitian and psychotherapist — only such a tandem of specialists provides a lasting result.

  • The dietitian analyses the metabolic profile and creates a balanced diet where the patient neither overeats nor starves, and balances deficiencies that have arisen due to the eating disorder.
  • The psychotherapist works on the causes that led to the development of the eating disorder.

The key to success is a defined type of nutrition, frequency of meals, and consideration of chronic diseases when building the diet. The sooner you seek qualified help, the more effective the treatment will be.

What signs may indicate an eating disorder.

The list below is an informational guide, not a tool for self-diagnosis or blame.

  • Constant fixation on weight, calories, body appearance
  • strict restrictions, exclusion of entire food groups
  • episodes of overeating or feeling a loss of control over eating
  • induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives or diuretics
  • excessive physical exercise related to weight control
  • avoidance of social situations where food is present
  • food rituals: cutting food into small pieces, very slow eating, refusal of certain foods

Some physical manifestations may also indicate an eating disorder: increased sensitivity to cold, constant fatigue, hair loss, menstrual cycle disturbances, deterioration of teeth condition in case of frequent vomiting.

If you recognise some of these signs in yourself or a loved one, it is a reason to seek consultation, not a reason for anxiety or self-blame.

Why eating disorders occur.

Eating disorders have a multifactorial origin — a combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. There is a genetic predisposition, but it is not decisive: environment and life experience play no less a role. Among the possible factors:

  • criticism of body and weight in childhood or adolescence
  • traumatic experience
  • media-imposed ideal of thinness
  • types of activities where low weight is a requirement (dance, gymnastics, etc.)

Stressful events or significant life changes (such as adolescence) can act as a trigger.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Can Eating Disorders be treated with nutrition alone, without a psychotherapist?

Nutrition is an important part of treatment but does not replace psychotherapy. The best results come from working in tandem: the dietitian restores safe eating habits, while the psychotherapist addresses the causes of the disorder.

How long does support for Eating Disorders last?

It depends on the condition and dynamics. Usually, it involves monthly support with plan adjustments — exact terms are discussed during the first consultation.

Do you offer online consultations?

Yes, consultations are conducted online in Ukrainian — accessible from any country.

Is a referral diagnosis needed before contacting?
