Nutrition for Food Intolerance

Food intolerance (FI) is a wide range of adverse reactions of the body to food: abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, rash, malaise.

Olga Bezugla, Clinical Dietitian

Intolerance and allergy are not the same!

Most patients are unaware that they have food intolerance, although it sometimes poses a much greater health risk than the well-known allergy.

Quite often, people have intolerance to:

  • milk
  • grains
  • legumes
  • mushrooms
  • berries, etc.

According to medical statistics, many people today experience symptoms of food intolerance but are unaware of it because the body does not react immediately, as with allergies, but only after a few hours or even days.

Food allergy is an immunological reaction based on the IgE mechanism. It manifests immediately after consuming the food, develops quickly, and a classic example can be anaphylaxis.

Symptoms of food intolerance.

  • Gastrointestinal tract – discomfort and acute stomach pain, nausea, unstable stool, heartburn
  • Skin – dryness, irritation, pustules, rashes, redness, itching
  • General health – malaise, dizziness, increased fatigue, weakness, excess weight, sometimes kidney stones

Self-diagnosing food intolerance is extremely difficult. It is necessary to keep a daily food diary and conduct a blood test for antibodies to the most popular foods.

Nutrition program.

  • One common type of sensitivity is histamine intolerance, which is diagnosed by excluding foods rich in histamine and those that stimulate its production from the diet.
  • When lactose intolerance is detected, the dietitian will select the most accessible and alternative products.
  • For gluten sensitivity, the specialist will create a diet of gluten-free products and teach the basic concept of the eating model.

Our dietitian will assist you in diagnosing food intolerance, select the necessary diagnostic algorithms, and create a personalised balanced diet. This will take into account the body's nutrient needs, teach the rules for choosing products and their quality replacements.
